I was wondering what everyone uses? I heard that the Sont 7506's were the way to go. They are 100 bucks. Im sure they give them best quality audio when on set but how important is that really with such low budget films? Basically can I get away with a nice set of regular cup head phones?

if the headphones are for your sound mixer, quality is important (he's gotta let the director know if the sound was blown or not on a take). If the headphones are for the director or anyone else that just wants to hear whats going on, than you probably don't need the best quality headphones (most directors value lighter headphones than higher quality). Quality sound is important, especially in lower budget projects. Quality headphones is only part of the process.

As for what I use, I've got a pair of sony cans that work out great, but I've got my eye on the bose headphones they use on airplanes (they're better at reducing external noise). But they're around $250.

What type of sony cans are they?

I bought the Audio Technica ATH-M30 phones. I've heard that they're exactly like the sony's, but don't fold for compact storage. Other than that, they're the same quality, and for $55 on Ebay. The 7506's are what most people wear, but for $100 your just paying for the brand Sony.

I'd get a good pair of headphones, you wnat to be able to edit late at night without your parents complaining! Don't get walmart phones, they make the sound/music better than it is. Basically these special phones like the 7506's and the ATH-M30's tell you truely what the sound is like, so you can fix any problems in post or on the field such as humm, distortion and volume level.

Check out the Sony MDRV-600's. Pretty good headphones for 100 bucks (if you have access to the PX on a military base, you can grab em for 67 dollars). They fold up for compact storage and the sound quality is pretty good (I've used them to film before and they didn't pose any problems). If you want some higher quality headphones you can grab these Sennheisers for like 150 bucks. Pretty good deal....

What about the noise cancelling headphones for shooting? Worth the price?

Get a pair of sennhieser eh2270. They have better cancelation than any set of AKGs I have ever owned or used in the studio, plus they sound 100 times better. The sennhiesers come with a warrenty and the drivers can easily be replaced by the user ( a common problem with any AKG model is the fact that the drivers burnout with frequent use, and they are a pain in the ass to replace). You can find a pair on ebay brand new w/ warrenty for about $65

decided to go with the eh2270's thanks for the advice. Ill let ya know how they work out.
