Hey,
I was wondering if anyones done this and is the sound recording better with the minidisc recorder? What are the steps to doing this as I am considering this for my next film. I rather keep the audio seperate and record it onto the minidisc device then straight to the DV tape. That way I can put farther away the camera.

In my Audio class this last semester the teacher told us to record our projects on either mini disk or cd. We listened to every project in class so i heard a lot of things that had been recorded onto minidisk and they all sounded great. I'd say if you've got the equipment for it go ahead and try it. Minidisk seems to make pretty pretty good quality sound.

goodwill...you'll get good sound out of the minidisc, but you should get a better signal out of a direct line to the cam. Minidisc audio is compressed (its not mp3, but it uses the same kind of idea, a compression algorithm). DV uses uncompressed 48K audio. they are both 16 bit - you may not even notice the difference - but unless you really need to i would go direct to cam just to avoid having to deal with sync later. If you do go the route of minidisc, make sure you either use a slate to get a good audio marker or have someone clap loudly visibly on cam before each take so you can line up the sync. I would think a really long mic cable would serve you better for getting the mic further away, what exactly are the conditions like that you couldnt do this? whatever you do, i would be redundant with audio through the cam just in case something goes wrong with the minidisc. Good luck w/ it.
