I just bought myself the JVC-DVL320u

more info:

http://www.jvc.ca/en/consumer/product-detail.asp?model=GR-DVL320U

The camcorder, bag, extra battery, 2 tapes, firewire card and wire cost me around $1300 (Canadian)

I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg on a cam since I do not know how far my interest in film making will go. So what do you guys think of the buy? Is it a good camera? Would I be able to make a nice looking film? etc.

Thank in advance.

What ever you do with other people's oppinions from this site, only use it constructively and do not take it to seriously if it is negative. Most likely they will say that you would have been better off with a 3 chip camera like the Canon XL1's or GL1's. It dont matter what camera you use, as long as you can come up with an original, and creative story and use your own unique techniques for filming also. Although I would recommend some accessories like filters, but thats just my 2 cents.

Seems like a pretty good buy, but, most JVC consumer cameras don't have microphone jacks, so you'd have to find some other way to record good audio. But, if you're just a beginner, I'd say you made a nice purchase. JVC focuses mainly on image quality, so you can get a really good picture out of it.

I believe that your setup is just fine for you.
Remember that you might be starting out and definately to not want to be overwhelmed with too many technical or price problems. I started out with a cheap 8mm camera then moved to Hi8 then to miniDV. As I progressed, I upgraded my equipment.
Do the same, because it will not be worth it in the end if filming just isn't your thing.
I think the system is great for your needs, also look into purchasing a tripod for all those steady shots.
