I know the XL1s pretty well but does anyone know what is lacking on the original XL-1? Thanks for the help.

Just a standard industry upgrade...I'm guessing the pro scan.

GL2s are better then xl1s...but damn the xl2 is sweet

i personally own an XL-1s and have operated the XL-1 in the past.

the major differences is overall better picture quality and the camera itself is better adapted toward the digital filmmaker.

it has 3 memories for white-balance, three different variable zoom speeds(slow, medium, and fast), and a whole array of assortments toward changing the picture quality, especially if you are in a low-light situation.

basically, the camera can quickly adjust to ANY lighting situation you expose it to.

plus with the variable shutter, it can capture images that mimic that of 16mm color film. A plus.

hope that answers your question.

oh and by the way, the XL-1/XL-1s cannot be touched by the GL-1.

that's where I stand.

ps--check out HEIST & ANTIWAR by

Actually something about the way light is picked up makes for a better picture from the GL2...odd since it has smaller chips, but canon made a conciouss<sp> effort to imporve it over the xl1s to compete better with sony. The xL2 however is supposedly a monster camera. Closing in on a quality similar to sony 24p. 1/2" ccds...i forget where I saw all this info..some videography mag at barnes and nobles.

Sony's only 24p device at the moment is the FDW-900 Cinealta HDCam. No mini-DV will ever be able to come close to rivaling that. Currently both the XL-1 and the XL-1s (Along with the PD-150 and VX-2000 I believe) are compatible with the P+S Technik's Mini35 adapter which is basically like having a 35mm CCD. If I were in the market for a Mini-DV camera I'd get one of those models for that reason alone (Of course the adapters cost in the range of $7,000+ not to mention lenses).
