I used to use ash on my face as a kid (when I was playing pro-baseball player or army). My mom made me stop b/c ash is very acidic or something. The blown up look is just a black powder makeup, I think. I don't think you'd want to use paint b/c it'd be too shiny. You're picture is a broken link, but traditionally I think it's a non-shiny black on the faces. Try going to your local drug or department store and look for a black powder-based makeup. Get there face damp and throw dust on them. Works for me.
