So I have $250 to spend and really need a shotgun mic for boom use.

I was thinking the Audio-Technica AT835b but have yet to try it in person so I'm unsure.
I know the college has a cheap shotgun and its just the worst thing to work with, just lots of static and hardly any pickup from the sound even with the preamp pinned on the camera. I just don't want to get stuck with a mic similar to that...

So I need this shotgun for boom use and it must be battery run since I don't have a power source when on location work.

Any suggestions?

Also Whats a good lowish priced boom?
A shot mount on it would be nice but isn't mandatory for my use.

I'd strongly consider picking up a RODE NTG-1 or 2...does your camera accept XLR inputs? If not, the RODE Videomic is one of the best for mini external mic jacks. There's also a new Seinnheiser that I can't remember the model of right now.

What camera are you using?

I believe that Seinnheiser model is a MKE300.

XLR would work fine for me. I currently am using the Sony HDR-FX1

The Rode NTG-2 looks great, Ill keep an eye out on ebay for that.

Thanks
