Hi there!

what is your favorite way to shoot white balance besides the common way - on white paper.
I heard that if you shoot at a very light purple sheet of paper the image becomes warmer are very cinematic.
Any tips?
Thanks!

Get as close to proper white balance as you can and then fix it at the CC'ing stage. I really don't think there is any other way to white balance, it's either flip through the presets manually or set it to auto.

White balancing with purple paper isn't really cinematic, just more orange-tinted as it is on the opposite side of the color wheel as purple. There are much more powerful things that can be done to an image to increase its cinematic quality, such as increased contrast and some diffusion. These are things you can control in post, and that's easier to do if you have a more neutral image.

I finished shooting a 20 minute short over the summer and never touched any kind of white balancing card.

It depends. I have yet to find a camera with a good enough pixel quality, dynamic range and grain level that color correcting ends up looking as good as adjusting white balance during shooting. I prefer to adjust toward the colors I want, blue, orange, or green by white balancing to their opposites, and then tweak in post.
