AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

$8,999? Get outta here. I wonder if Canon will sell the body alone and if it's compatible with XL1/XL2 components. It damn well should be.

canon usually stays with compatible lenses (XL-3 will be backward compatible with 1 and 2 lenses). now I just need about 10,000 dollars, anyone want to rob a bank with me?

no, the lens is the best part of this camera. I wonder if they'd sell THAT separately. I'd be shocked if the xl1/2 lens are backwards compatible. The one thing that's cool is that there's HD SDI (4:2:2) output so you can record directly to a hard drive better than HDV quality video.

HDV is not at all a very good acquisition format for filmmakers and I really hope they follow panasonic's direction and move away from miniDV-based storage solutions. Speaking of, have you guys been following the hvx200 camera developments? DV, DVCPro (regular, 50, and HD), and HDV. It will start shipping in December. It only has one CCD, but it will do 1080 24p in 4:2:2. Now that would be pretty sweet. Plus it's a few grand cheaper than the XL HD.

I currently work at a high end electronics store as a salesmen, so I checked to see if the price of the XL2 is going down because of this new camera... Turns out the XL2 may be discontinued within the next few months!? How is that possible? It just came out!

Usually there's tons of gossip about the new cameras that are coming out... but this time I think it caught us all off guard. How is it that none of us new of this camera in advance?

I'd give this a little time to develop again since it only shoots 1080i, I'll wait till it shoots 720p... But one of the things I'm the most interested in, is being able to record to a harddrive in a higher quality than originaly intended for mini dv casette... Could this mean that well finally get unlimited frame rate adjustments so we can finally get true slow-motion? Time can only tell...

Looks really cool, hopefully we'll see a ripple effect with XL2 dropping in price causing XL1s to drop and Gl2 to drop.

true slow motion would be beautiful, I friggin hate doing it on computer, it always looks like crap. But if I could do it while on camera . . . oh that would be beautiful . . .

Last i heard the 24F is not a true 24 fps mode. Any word on that? I thought the HDV spec didnt allow for 24p. I'm a huge fan of the XL2, but the HVX gets my vote for right now because of that...and i'm still sketchy on the HDV spec.

they'll get HD right soon - HDV just ain't it, I'm with Joren on this one.

1) The camera will not ship in a kit without the lens. As Joren said, the lens is the best part.

2) The camera will be backwards compatible with existing XL lenses, but you probably wouldn't want to use them as they won't resolve HD like the new lens will.

3) The Panasonic HVX-200 does not support HDV. However, it can perform an in-camera downconversion to regular old DV25 on the built-in miniDV VTR. Also, it has 3 CCDs, like the DVX, not only 1.

4) The XL2 is not going anywhere. This is not the XL3, it is the XL H1. It has no standard definition capabilities. So, don't plan for an XL2 price break. They are not really in the same market.

5) The 24p recording of this camera is, of course, not actually 24p. In fact, the CCD is not even progressive! Canon doesn't even use the letter "p". Nope, it's "24f" and "30f". The camera has a "frame" mode that will be familiar to any user of a GL or XL. Exactly how it works is not completely clear to me right now.

You can find tons of good info on the XL H1 watchdog site:

http://www.dvinfo.net/canonxlh1/watchdog.php

It really is quite a toss-up right now between the HVX and XL. DVCPro HD on P2 cards sounds sweet, but so does Genlock and HD-SDI out! Decisions, Decisions.

Eric, you're absolutely right about the hvx: no HDV and 3-ccd.

Ass for the tossup between HVX and XLHD, as stated before, my money is on the HVX. ...and I've never been a huge panny fan. You can jam sync the hvx's via firewire. Also, the xlhd's HD-SDI is only one channel SDI (meaning it's limited to 4:2:2 colorspace). ...the same as the HVX. Plus, with the pixel shifting they're using to keep the chipsize low and the light sensitivity high, you're not getting better than 4:2:2 comming off the chip anyways.

I'm not saying this to start a brand war. In fact, without seeing frames or video from either camera, I assume cannon will have the better optics given what they've done with their new lens. That's all. It is an exciting time for consumer HD. Who whould have thought that for $15K you could shoot and edit HD (DVCPro HD). And between Blu-Ray and DVD-HD, within a year, you'll be able to cheaply distribute HD content. ...even if no one can view it.

I agree Joren. I used to be a XL1 type of guy but the picture of the DVX changed that. I lean slightly toward the HVX at this point. There's a new FireStore coming out that supports DVCPro HD and the HVX, so it remains to be seen if that can be made compatible with the XL HD1 (via HD-SDI or firewire).

If we don't see some example footage soon I'm going to go insane.

is it possible to record 40 frames per sec. with something other than a p2 card for the hvx200? maybe firestorm or another hard drive. it seems like portable hard drives would only be able to store a regular dv stream from the hvx200 though. what can I do?
