are you talking about the mics that you can hook into your iPod? Because if that's what you are thinking of doing, I wouldn't advise it. It's very poor quality. My friend bought one and returned it the next day.

I bought a digital voice recorder that takes an external mic and holds like 2 hours of voice. I used a pretty good shotgun mic and had 15 pages of V/O recorded, downloaded to the computer and it sounded like crap. Nothing I could do (in my limited knowledge base!) could fix the sound.

I had to re-record. I'm sure there are different levels of recorders and maybe the person I gave the recorder to was in a bad-accoustics room, but I doubt I'll try that again!

Just my experience. Maybe others have had success. I bought a downloadable sound recording program for $99, a very good studio mic for $99 and can now do ADR directly to my computer as a wav file and the quality is EXCELLENT. I'm at work right now and don't have the links or name of the program, but when I get home tonight I'll post it.

Good luck.

i've got a digital recorder/4 track mixer that's primarily used for music, however it works perfectly to do sound for movies. It's got XLR inputs and all of the levels are completely adjustable. It records the sound onto a memory stick (not sure which one, about an inch square)

I got it for free from a friend, but i think it retails for about 1500. I wouldn't recommend using an iPod for this.

I have one of those Belkin Voice Recorders for my Photo. Durden is right, they suck at quality. But they do get the job done pretty quick and painless.
