I am looking to shoot a film in a forest soon and am after a good fog/smoke machine to really set a mood and add to the production design. I can't seem to find any stores that sell them around my area and so will probably have to purchase the machine online. I'm curious to know if anyone has any experience with this sort of equipment, and what brands/things I should look out for. I don't want to waste money on a machine that sucks, so some advice might really help.

Unless the weather conditions are perfect the fog from a glycol-fueled machine will dissipate into the air very quickly. Too fast to be able to fill a large area with the smoke. You would probably need several running in order to fill the background and the foreground.

Vapor from dry ice however is very cold so it tends to stay close to the ground. I checked and there are several vendors in Australia, I dont know how much you would need to fill a large area though.

For a small fee, I'll stand around your set chain smoking.

Thankyou. That was the sort of technical info that I was after. Anyone else care to add anything that'd be great.

Yes, I know, there are plenty on there but I want to make sure I know what I'm getting before I committ to a purchase.

Please keep the help coming.
