If anyone can give me some feedback on my demo reel (length, editing style, titles, etc) it would be greatly appreciated.

The music gave me a headache..

Also, the cutting is pretty fast. You might want to put some slower/calmer sequences in if you have them.

Finally, the overall length is a little long. I know some people make demo reels that are 6-7 minutes long but shorter is better to me.

Well, what are you making this demo reel for? Is it to showcase your directing skills? Your cinematography skills? Your editing skills? Because all this really is is an overly-long trailer. I'm try to be constructively critical when I say this - I didn't learn anything about you as a filmmaker except you edit quickly.

So, if this is just to show off, which is fine - I make these sorts of things all the time for that reason - great, but if you're trying to serve a practical purpose, no one will get anything out of this. It's too fast to learn anything about any of your films, and the stuff that looked cool left too quickly.

My cents.

The demo reel is for an internship with an editing firm that puts together fast-paced sports reels for Major League Baseball. Now, I have never filmed anything about sports, but I am just trying to get across my general ability to put together the type of stuff you see on ESPN, TNT and FOX all the time. Believe me, I don't want to do this my whole life (I'm an English and Film Studies major), but an internship for the summer would be nice.

hey, I think it's okay, but knowing you put this together for an internship at an editing firm, I'd remove the "director" and "cinematographer" thing at the beginning. It makes you look more amateur (do I really want a surgeon working on me that also works as a paramedic?). Also, maybe you could do some motion graphics to put in there. Sports is full of them and, while it may not be your job, show aptitude and understanding of the whole process is a good thing.

Now, content-wise, you had some really great stuff. Visually interesting shots. Good cuts. Etc. However, it needed to either change tempo or be much shorter. It almost feels like you just threw interesting shots together in a random order because I'd see a particular clip, then something else, then something close to the first clip again. Is there any way you can force more of a narrative on the montage? It might help.

You do have a great style and interesting shots. Well done.

Hey, thanks for everyone's feedback.

Joren- the first thing I have done was remove "director" and "cinematographer"...you are right, it didn't belong there.

Unfortunately I have no aptitude in motion graphics, which is why I am sort of applying for this on a whim, but After Effects is on my list of things to do this summer.

The general consensus I'm getting is to lengthen clips and shorten overall. I will do just that.

I actually liked the quick cutting it made the whole thing seem hardcore. The opening title sequence was snazzy, I thought it was cool and esatblished the pacing. Shots, cinematographically were pretty good (I remembered that one 24 hour film about the hitman it was cool) - Some of the sequence of this montage seemed out of place, like shot A, shot B, shot A in the second half of it compared to the random clips at the start. I disliked the dancing shadows on the curtain, at first it was okay, but the second and third times weren't really that great - dump 'em. Overall I liked it.
