I don't know what price range you're in, but if you're looking for a good shotgun mic I'd suggest the Audio Technica ATR-55. I use it and it works excellently. It runs for around $65. Bought it from J & R Music & Computer World, jandr.com.

Just figured I'd try to help, since you're obviously not going to choose the Calrad model after that review.

What kind of camera do you use the mic for, and how do you have it configured to your camera?

My camera is one of the cheap ones. It's a Canon ZR-40. Actually, if you know the ZR series, they're famous for their terrible built-in mics. That's why a good externmal microphone was so important. (For an example of howimportant, you just need to look at the very first movie I made, Football in the Groin. Oh man the sound quality in that is awful...)

So, yeah, I'm not exactly sure what you mean about how I have it configured for my camera, though. It, uh, plugs into the microphone jack and I switch it on to whatever microphone power I need. It's not a tough choice, because it only has two power settings: normal and tele.

Sorry, I guess I shoulda been a bit more specific.
What I meant was, did you have any adapters or power converters , or did you just hook the mic right into the camera.
Sorry for my little to no knowledge on the subject. Right now I am just mastering lighting...sound is the next enemy to conquer and control.

I got the ATR-55 for 49 at http://www.soundprofessionals.com...look in Shotgun mics...

It's in there...and it's cheaper...I haven't used it extensively, but it seems pretty good.

I don't have any adaptors. Its power supply is one double-A battery. I do use a converter that I bought at Radio Shack to immediately change the microphone's sound from mono to stereo. The converter's not absolutely necessary, though, as the same thing can be done in post production, but I find it much easier my way because it's easier to hear the sound when I'm shooting.

And Brandini found a better price, so if you're going to get it, forget jandr.com and go to his link

If you can afford it, get a mic with XLR output. If you're going to be attaching it to a fishpole you're gonna need to get a longer cord, and with mini cables, the longer the cord the worse the quality. XLR doesn't loss any quality the longer you go.
