Since people are doing a poll based on who they're going to vote for I decided that I'd do a non-political presidential fun fact poll... especially since I am a closet US History buff:

Who is the only president ever to get to serve office without ever being involved in a presidential election?

That's an easy one for an old-timer, history buff like me. When you're so old, you've actually met George Washington . . . ! Wink

Good question, though!

Yeah, I know. I was just telling how old I am! Wink

I don't know if you're aware or not, but the group CHICAGO sang about two US Presidents - one on your list and one that's not. It's the one that's not that makes the clue hot!

It was Gerald Ford.

After Spirow Agnew resigned as Vice President under Richard Nixon, Nixon nominated Ford to be Vice President and he was confirmed by the house and senate.

Then when Nixon resigned, Ford became president.

We posted at the same time! CHICAGO had a song in the 80s called HARRY TRUMAN and one in the early 70s entilted A SONG FOR RICHARD AND HIS FRIENDS (re: Pres Nixon). It was pretty brutal (but I liked it!).

"Hey now, will you go away?
I said, hey now, will you take all your friends?
Even though you never said a word that would help anyone but yourself,
Tomorrow is just a bad dream, just a bad dream."

LOL
I knew it was Nixon's VP. I just thought his VP was Johnson. I guess that's worse than not knowing at all.

Johnson was just before Nixon, right? He took us to 'Nam?

You're correct that LBJ was before Nixon, but I read that Eisenhower sent the first "advisors" to Vietnam. Maybe Chris can confirm or correct me on that - as I may be mistaken! I think LBJ escalated the war quite a bit though.

As a kid, I can remember watching the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. They would show the "highlights" of the war and have a graphic showing how many Viet Cong were killed, and how many US Servicemen were killed, wounded and missing in action. Every night.

If you ever want to see a hilarious spoof on covering that war, watch the GROOVE TUBE (Chevy Chase's first movie). The names they used for the Vietnamese cities were great!

Well.. It is my understanding that we had men in Vietnam during the Kennedy administration and possibly before, but the war escalated when LBJ started bombing North Vietnam and the way really took off into a "war".

I'm not a Vietnam history buff though. This is what I got off of the top of my head from a History Channel special! Smile
