Oldboy did have a nice twist, and up until the third act I wasn't sure if I liked the movie. Everything just seemed so silly. Then suddenly after the movie was finished, I was like "Well that was messed up." But if you stop to think about it, a lot of the movie WAS very silly and just didn't make a lot of sense. It really shouldn't work. I think it's luck that it came out the way it did. Probly because of the editing process.
If you've seen anything else by Chanwook, you'll notice that he's really not that talented, and he has nothing else up his sleeve.
Takashi Miike owns him.

The whole backstory between the two main guys and the reason why the bad guy wanted revenge were stupid. It wasn't very believable that the bad guy would have had a grudge for that long. He went to such great lengths for payback for something so retarded.
The reason for his imprisonment also comes outta nowhere and there were no clues throughout the movie until the end. The highschool thing seemed really cheap and lazy on the writer's part.
There were many little details that were unclear, like how he was captured. And how/why he was released. Maybe they were explained but I don't remember. I haven't seen it in a long time.

You think his sister dying was a retarded reason for getting revenge? I do agree that the fact that there were almost no clues why someone would do this to him was pretty lame, but it also added a great sense of mystery and suspense.
From what I remember the main guy never killed the bad guy's sister. She killed herself because of a 'rumor' started in high school, right? And that's where the revenge comes in. Pardon me if I think this is a tad silly. They could've made that little backstory a lot more convincing. It feels like they just tossed it in there because they needed a reason for the bad guy to want revenge. Feels very sloppy and cheap. Not to mention the bad guy waits a long time before deciding to get revenge.
Another thing to throw out there is that the main guy should've kept his distance from his girl, once he found out, instead of doing what he did. The end makes him a sicko bad guy really.

The reason she killed herself though was because of the rumors Oh Dae Su spread about her. I can see why you feel that the reason for revenge was just thrown in there because they needed one, seeing as how it was revealed so late in the story. I thought that seemed to add to the mystery though. The antagonist of the story waited as long as he did though because he was only a teenager when his sister died. Once he was an adult he could reep his revenge on Oh Dae Su to the fullest (by putting him through what he went through with his sister). Plus the antagonist (can't remember his name) was pretty insane too. As for Oh Dae Su staying away from Mi Do after he found out she was his daughter: Even if he did keep his distance she would wonder why he never came back to her after he killed the antagonist, which would force him to tell her the truth. It's still disgusting that he decides to stay with her anyway though.
The answer to this poll has still not been given! I need closure!
By the way, after watching The Village again, I still think it kind of sucks, but the cinematography is pretty nice. Good use of colours. The film is pretty bad though.
