2D or 3D? With 2D the primary tool to use is Adobe Flash. The animation side of the package is very easy to pick-up (only a few concepts to learn about, and then you can run with it) Its more or less the same as traditional hand-drawn animation, but with a lot of added tools to make the task a lot easier. Like I said, its fairly easy to pick up, and really the only thing that will limit you is your drawing ability and your knowledge of motion. For 3D there are a variety of different software packages out there. However be warned that learning how to use a 3D animation package will require an enormous amount of time and dedication. The software is massive and not always very user-friendly...but this is what gives it such large potential. 3D is very exciting and awesome, but it takes a lot of work and dedication. If you let me know more about what you are interested in doing, I can give you more specific tips or links or tutorials to help you out.
