I might try to film a short narrative which will require some fake blood and guts. Any suggestions to make these effects as life like as possible? Thanks a lot!

If authenticity is important to you, and you can't afford a professional, the simple answer is - use real blood and guts. Hell, the alien eggs in "Alien" were made from, I believe, a cow's stomach (this is begging to be corrected).

This is without a doubt the greatest blood you can make on a budget. It was used in many professional horror films way back when.

Corn syrup and red food coloring.

It looks more like blood than actual blood does.

There ya go! Your on your own for the guts.

How can it look... MORE real?

Oh. It was rhetorical somehow. I understand.

Corn syrup and food coloring does not resemble real blood at all. The consistency is wrong and the color is wrong.

Actual blood derives its color from the hemoglobin and oxygen in the blood cells. The plasma is colorless. It's virtually opaque. To get this result, thinned red poster paint (as used in every Leone western and most Japanese grindhouse) is pretty good. There's a product called 'squirt blood' that is water based and very opaque. This also works well for a powerful, bright red look.

The corn blood is only good in massive quantities. It sucks for closeups and scrapes and bruises.

wow that sounds like it would be incredible cheap...and now that I think about it, it would probably look amazing on video!

It's even worse for massive quantities. Too thick, too clear, and too dull. These things all show up more when it's rapidly squirted or sloshed around, since its lack of strong coloration is obvious. Trust me, I've used it quite a bit.

Wow I didn't have any problems with it. I used it mostly on clothing, though, so maybe that's why I didn't notice the defects.

Thinned red poster paint, huh? Does that stuff wash out?

poster paint is made for little kids to use, so it should be washable. if it's not completely washable, i'm sure it'd come out better than food coloring.

Do you mean that kinda' stuff that comes in medium (yet hand sized) can's you can find at any highschool art department?

I usually use regular acryilic paints and water. A mixture of bright red, then dumb it down with black. It works decently, but that's only because my camera does pretty bland work with colours.

I don't know why I didn't post this before, actually.

yeah, you can't splash the corn blood.
But if you just dump it and let it lay there it looks decent. I remember experimenting with it in the kitchen once and I added something to thicken it up . . . I wish I could remember whatit was. . .
