James Cameron shot an IMAX doc on deep-sea creatures and made an interesting comment in the news article below - that shooting docs was harder than shooting regular movies, in that you don't know if you're wasting time or getting that perfect shot!
I'm tired of people (mostly those whos jobs rely on it) who say film is so much better than film. Even with this new digital technology that looks like it could surpass the film comming, I feel that it doesn't take a great film quality to make a great film and I have no problem shooting on the same camcorders (like everyone else on this site) that I've used on all of my films cause it allows me to make my films at a low cost which means I have more time to experiment and have more takes of a particular scene (think "El Mariachi" with 100 more takes per shot). Kodak even sent my school what is the film equivalent of a Nazi propaganda film about how much better film is and had a whole bunch of famous DOP's talk about how shooting digital costs the same for them as shooting film and film looks better. Even went as far as to encourage and recammend younger filmmakers shoot film too. Not that I have a problem with film mind you, I just maintain that until I can shoot and edit film at an equal price to the cheapest video medium I won't shoot it pperiod. I used to shoot on an old VHS camera (and still would without a doubt) except that I needed a new camera and found editing on a mac better than between 2 VCR's better and it wasn't costing me more. All the same it's nice to see a famous director make an attemppt to further technology instead of being stubborn.

I also think the whole new projector thing is along the same lines as the threads on VHS and VCR's. Theatres aren't just gunna suddenly spend alot of money replacing their projectors just because it's higher quality. Theyre all too afraid of the whole "laser disk" technology evolution. Anyone remember Laser Disk? That's why it's gunna be hard to get these new screens goin.

I agree that I doubt theatres will completely retrofit their screens with new digital projectors. However, I can see them taking it one-theatre-at-a-time over the next few years - depending on the number of features shot with that technology.
And I do remember laser disks! Kind of reminds me of the old 45 record players you install in your car!
so many schools in canada have those cause they were coned into thinking they were going to be "the next big thing" instead they sit around, ppl wont even steal them theyre that crappy.
