I'm a freshman at Emerson and want a camera to do side projects with. I don't need an amazing camera to make features with, but shorts that will help hone my skills with. I found a deal where I can get a brand new GL2 for 1600 with a rebate, here I don't have to worry about how much it's been used. Would you say this would be the best choice, or would you go with a cheap HD camera or maybe a used better camera? I'd love a DVX100, but I'm worried about how much they'd been used if they're selling for 2,000 or under.

You can find a DVX100a with only 100 or so hours on the heads (and a bunch of accessories) for an average price of about $1,800. The DVX100a is probably your best option, and I just don't think you will be that satisfied or impressed with a GL2.

XL-2s (used) are also getting down there in price, though it's all about what you'd like. You don't seem to have an opinion on Panasonic vs. Canon, so if you're thinking about the DVX-100, then the XL-2 is the comparable camera, and the GL2 is a step down. I love my XL-2, but others love their DVX-100, so it's all about preference. I'd see if any of your fellow film students have the goods and would be willing to let you play with it.

Agreed. A DVX would be a great option for your price range.

DVX100b can be had for $2000, low hours and a couple accessories if you're lucky. Under 100 hours for sure! Brand new the DVX100b goes for $2500 from authorized dealers.

I just recently sold my DVX100b with 62 hours on the heads, with a monitor and extra battery for $2400 CDN to buy a XH-A1.

Check out www.dvxuser.com and the marketplace. I think someone just posted a DVX100b for sale in the last couple days. The only reason they're selling is because they're upgrading to HD. Most of them have been used for one or two projects and no longer suits their needs. Tape head hours don't really matter unless they're over 200. Then I'd start to become wary, but then again - I wouldn't purchase a camera with over 200 hours on the heads.

Hope this helps,

Kegan

*FYI - DVX's estimated tape head use before replacement is somewhere along the lines of 1000 hours I think, so don't worry when you see 150 hours on tape heads. If its a good deal, go for it! and please...don't buy a GL2 - brand new may seem like a good idea, but the GL2 already has no resale value. Why put yourself in a bad situation when that cash can be put towards something in a whole level better?
