Although I kinda don't like to say it...Steven Spielburg in my opinion is the greatest film maker of all time. He has done it all(almost) and can't seem to make a bad film. Plain and simple, he just knows film too well.

Wait a second, maybe you guys forgot the greatest ever, The Coen Brothers. Every single film they have made so far has been nothing short of spectacular.
As for Spielberg (spelled as I wrote it), maybe you all forgot about Jurassic Park: The Lost World, and A.I., two terrible pieces of monkey crap.

I think A.I. would have been amazing if Kubrick did not sadly pass away. Stanley has DONE it all. I won't dare bad mouth spielberg because what he did with E.T. was nothing short of a miracle my friends. IF you like it or not, all the greats will agree on E.T.

Spielberg is the best. Not only what he did with ET, but Shcindlers List, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Indiana Jones, Close Encounters. I could go on forever about these classics.
And I know they are not the greatest, but I also reckon that the Farrely Brothers have made some pretty funny films.

How was I supposed to know it was a guy in a suit?Besides, anyone willing to wear a Mickey Mouse suit deserves to get hit by a car...that and my brakes failed, kind of.
Too difficult a question! It's like picking a favorite song or food or movie!
I would say, in no particular order:
Speilberg Ron Howard John Ford Howard Hawks Billy Wilder Alfred Hitchcock Scorcese (newcomers to watch out for later) Sam Mendes Steven Daldry Peter Jackson Steven Soderbergh
Of course, it's easy to pick the big names!

Sorry about the spelling...my bad. Anyhow don't forget "JAWS" holly crap that movie messed with so many people's minds, classic for sure. "The color Purple" was also a great flick by Spielb"e"rg. And as for "A.I" and "The Lost World", every director makes a few average or "crap" movies...although those two movies are better than 70% of the rest of the films out there, so it's all about perspective I guess. As for a second favorite, Hitchcock is the man! I might even say he is tied with Spielberg. But then again you have to look at all the films that Spielberg has produced as well, omg I could go on for hours.

I personally don't have a favorite filmmaker but I do favor the up-and-comers who got their deal from a great indie like Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, and Quentin Terrantino. A.I sucked, and the only reason I watched it the whole way through because my sub-concious was convinced that Speilberg was going to somehow make it better...nope, didn't happen. Plus, no one mentioned Minority Report in his list of great films! Huh?
If you think pseudo-intellectual, emotionally empty films are the way to go, than Kubrick's your man. If the man wasn't technically gifted the world would have forgotten him long ago.
John Cassavetes is another that I would've put on the list if there was room.
let me tell you something J_Richards. Stanely Kubrick was one of the film industy's geniuses. His films have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars and has gained the respect of the entire world, and then you come along and say that he "sucks." Not only have you no right to say this, but I would like to see you become even a fraction of what he accomplished.
Normally I would not be this angry, but your total lack of experience in film or video becomes very apparent in your post. I am aware that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but saying that Mr. Kubrick "sucks" is an incredibly dastardly act. If you anything about film you would learn to appreciate all different styles and genres.

So he's a Canadian? Wow...hmmm. Well I don't like one Cameron movie...I think they're weak. But he has done a lot for the industry special effects wise, which has pushed other film makers to make great films. I wouldn't even put him in the top 20s list, but I do feel that he has done a lot for the game.
