I think Spirited Away is by far and away (that was lame) the best animated feature out there. I've shown it to many of my friends, most of who claim to loathe anime and groaned when I made them watch it, and every single one of them has loved the film.

No, not ALL of them. Still, of those that I have seen, Spirited Away just feels the most complete, the most intimate, and the most visually cohesive (if any of that makes sense). I remember thinking Myazaki couldn't possibly top himself after Princess Mononoke. I was proven wrong (in my opinion) with Spirited Away. I still love Princess Mononoke, as it was the first of his films that I ever saw (I was 10).

They all just seem to have something most American animated films lack...something almost like soul. And yes, I like some american animated films.

Agreed. Wow I laugh at Hostel and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but Spirited Away thrills me.
Sometimes Im embarrassed to admit I like it just because people assume its another Dragonball Z.

Whether a film is animated or live action has no bearing on whether it is good or not, but unfortunately people do seem to see 'anime' as a sub-standard medium. (Though that's not entirely unfounded.) Other noteworthy animated films are Grave of the Fireflies by Isao Takahata, Paprika (I forgot the director's name), and though it's not so great overall, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence by Oshii Mamoru has some incredible sequences and visuals in it. If you can get a hold of it though, seriously, watch My Neighbor Totoro. It seems like a really kiddy film, but it's got some true depth.

Woah... woah... I never criticize people's favorite movie lists, but can you explain in like one or two sentences why National Treasure is there? I'm truly curious, because I consider it to be one of the worst films in modern history. I just need to understand the opposite perspective on that one.

In response to titaniumdoughnut:

I like National Treasure so much because it makes American history look cool, and each time I watch it I catch some new little detail...

It's entertaining (to me) every time I watch it...

Out of curiousity, why do you dislike it so much?

I really don't want to hijack this thread with a National Treasure debate, so I'll be quick. The script was terrible, the direction and acting was embarrassingly bad, and the logic was hideously flawed. If you're trying to make a conspiracy story, it needs to stand up to scrutiny, and this didn't. For example, when they found that secret whatever it was by watching the shadow of the sun, it didn't occur to the writers that the shadow would be in a different place EVERY DAY at the same time. Millions of things like that. I just felt like it was a really, really lame attempt. I guess you're right, and it did make American history look cool, but that's about all it had going for it.

Oh yeah Forest Gump is awesome too...

And regarding National Treasure:

Titanium, it seems that we are polar opposites when it comes to our opinions of it...I guess that's the brilliance of movies (or maybe the downfall, not exactly sure which); one person can love it while another can hate it...

This list is constantly changing and evolving, but here's ten for now (in no particular order):

Schindler's List
The Shawshank Redemption
Casablanca
Jurassic Park
The Lion King
No Direction Home
Empire of the Sun
Saving Private Ryan
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Forrest Gump

So many more I couldn've written, but those are ten of the ones that are constantly up there for me.

By the way, I thought National Treasure was okay. I mean I didn't go in expecting anything special, so I wasn't disapointed when I got an average family-friendly treasure-hunting film. I think most people whom this film was targeted at wouldn't care about the flaws mentioned. Still, National Treasure had nothing on Indiana Jones, which wasn't far off my top 10.

Just saw Hot Fuzz... titaniumdoughnut, I can see why it would be in your top 10. Absolutely awesome. I laughed so hard, especially at the end (the last 30 minutes or so are brilliant). And, just like Shaun of the Dead was actually a good horror film, this was a really good action movie! I can also see how being with a bunch of other film people would make it that much better.

Now we just have to wait for Run Fatboy Run.

You know, whenever I watch Jurrasic Park, I'm still amazed at how good a movie it is for the actual plot. I mean, Crichton is known for some out-there stories, but a dinosaur theme park? Somehow, though, Spielberg and Crichton ended up with what I think is one of the most entertaining movies ever made. Definately in that nebulous 11-20 region that's constantly churning. Along with the original Star Wars trilogy, Aliens, Casion Royale, Children of Men, Borat, Little Miss Sunshine, and Pitch Black.

Wow. I've effectively just extended this into a top 20.

My List:

1. Miller's Crossing
2. The Departed
3. GoodFellas
4. Brick
5. Fight Club
6. Fargo
7. Scarface
8. Garden State
9. Sin City
10. Pulp Fiction

The order changes like everyday but those are usually the films that are up there. I enjoy many comedies but I would have to write a whole new list just for them because they can't compete with any of those movies
