Don't listen to your dumb-ass friends! They'll probably want you to do a stupid "gun" film.
Anyway...
I think it sounds like a good "idea" (but is that all it is?...). It's not 'high concept' -- but may be good if the journey is interestingly told. don't fallow other student film makers, follow 'your' gut. Only you know what type of films you want to make, so do it. And do it well.
Don't worry about drama (i.e. action sequences.. not every film needs a gun, and the word "FUCK"), worry about the script. Is it interesting?... then it's probably a movie. It's not always the subject mater, it's more about "how" it's told.

BTW... If you are serious about being a screen writer move to LA and try to get a job being a "reader". It will give you tuns of experience (i.e. what is a good script what is not). I know someone who used to be a reader, he sold a script, and is currently the head writer on Dawson's Creek......
BTW.... it took years, not weeks

Jay888 is correct. The idea sounds interesting, but it will depend on the journey/story you come up with.
I've come up with a bunch of really great ideas for scripts (both theatre and short films), but sometimes the story just isn't that good. You have to go with a story that you are comfortable telling - not what your friends will find interesting.
Besides if your three or four friends don't like the story, their six or eight parents may love it!
Your story - your script. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! And as a "PS" - I learn as much or more from my 'bad scripts and ideas' as I do from my good ones!
