It's that magical time of year again, an annual event celebrated by me and all of my cinematic compatriots (ok, just me and Kyle, but u get the point). That's right, it's the annual skipping pof the Oscars. The Academy Awards are and annual disgrace to film that involve nothing more than a red carpet fashion show and a popularity contest that falsely represent what film is about, at least to myself and some other ppl on this site who are interrested in film as a form of art and expression. I invite you all to NOT watch or care about the Oscars this, and every year because film is not about competetion, but about something personal and powerful that we can share with each other, instead of needing "winners," "nominees,' and "losers." A motion picture "industry" is nothing more than 100 year old studios now owned by major corporations who will do anything to make a buck, hence the stream of sequels, bio picks, and comic book adaptation yhat exemplify their inability to create anything original or real. For those who agree with me, you are no longer alone in ur pain and confusion.

Okay okay, so you don't like the motion picture industry. Fine. No one forces anyone to watch the Oscars. I probably will. It's a fun social activity. If you work in Hollywood, you talk about it. You just do. So what if it's really not that important. MP people work really hard on movies and this is their night. It's a celebration. Plain and simple. Who cares about the fashion show on the red carpet?
You alienate us when you define people who agree with you as the ones who are interested in film as art and expression. Who are you to decide what expression is, let alone art? If you are interested in film as a deeply personal artform, great. But you just sound silly when you insinuate there's no art in any of the nominated films. Perhaps you didn't mean to imply that, but you paint your prose in such broad, gerneralized strokes it's hard to be sure.

Look I don't want to start a fight, but I think you're being disrepectful to those of us who don't agree with you, and it's obnoxious in a forum meant for the free flowing of ideas.

HDK is perfectly free to voice his opinions in the clear and non-confrontational manner in which he did.
Thank you for the invite man, it sounds like a fun time, but I'm afraid I can't make it because I'll be at home watching the Oscars
No, seriously, the Oscars are kind of stupid, and the prizes don't go to the most deserving 90% of the time; but its still fun to see it all... even if it is just a giant, expensive, pompous waste of time

Sorry but I'm going to have to reject your invitation even though it is more about the glamour than the movies. And Chris Rock is hosting so that should kickass. Go Oscars
Well, I'll be there with you HDK. I'm not very interested in the Oscars [Nor do I have the enthusiasm to become interested]. So here's to us, the ones who will have nothing to talk about at work, lol.

i stopped showing an interest in ANYTHING after Titanic won best picture. Thats how much that stupid show has ruined my life
the thing that pisses me off about the oscars is not the actual award giving (I think giving awards to recognize good film is awesome, but not the way the Oscars do it. but awards mean nothing, but yeah) but they just wh0re it out making it seem like no matter what, the films nominated are THE BEST FILMS, when really they suck. and then the next day on TV everyone talks about the movies and how awesome they are with their overworked pretentious camera work, same old actors doing the same roles, and typical stories anyone with a 'how to write a screenplay' could write.
then they make the show super freaking long, cause for somereason these idiots think that longer means better and more suspensefull (like in American Idol, another dumb show) and they galamorize the HELL outta everyone, shoving cameras in people's faces to get their reactions as if they are necessary to see, "Oh, Jack Nicholson is laughing at Chris Rock's jokes, if Jack thinks they're funny, I need to think they are funny too."
also they have those idiot reporters from access hollywood/entertainment tonight who ask the celebs dumb questions that have absolutely NOTHING to do with film, "who's your date tonight?" and if you dont have a date, let it be known you'll be the talk of tommorow on the dumb access shows.
i remember last year I watched the pre show or whatever and that dip sh** Billy Fox was jumping over actors like hurdles to get to someone to ask the world's dumbest question, wha ta rude assh***, if he did what he did that night (Shoving his *** in my face to talk to Reese Witherspoon) I would of kicked him in the nuts and send him falling over the seat infront of him, causing him to slam his skull onto the ground and die.
billy fox can suck it.

Kyle, if you think that the reporters/correspondents are asinine, then you have to watch THE TONIGHT SHOW's "Ross the Intern". He'll be at the Oscar's and they should show the piece a night or two afterwards (check your local listings!).
If haven't seen him, Ross is, ummm - not very svelte and slightly effiminate. He badgers all of the stars as they walk down the carpet. I'm not sure which is funnier, him trying to get an interview or the stars that humour him.
It makes me wonder if Leno is making fun of Ross or the event itself (probably both!).
I agree that opinions should be shared. I for one have an interest in the Oscars. I by no means think that the movies nominated "really suck." I think a better word choice would be 'successful.' After all, filmaking is a business just as much as it is an art. The films at the osacars did the best job selling their product to the population, and are therefore going to be acknowledged for it.
However, I wouldn't hold the winner of Best Motion picture according to the Academy any higher than I would... Matthew Parnell, for example. I see he is the the winner for a best film, too. I can't say that his film is any better or worse than the best film in hollywood.
After all, art is based entirely on individual opinion.
So yeah, I'm gonna watch, and i'm gonna have my opinions, agreements, and disagreements. That's part of learning as an artist anyways. I don't plan to boycott the Oscars just because those people have more money than me.
Afterwards I will probably watch some movies on StudentFilms.com, and find some things just as impressive.
This is my signature.

I believe yer there are good films nominated, but they arent the be all end all of international, or even American Cinema. The oscars are so politically motivated, and so caught up in Big Budgets, they forget the actual art of filmmaking.
I was turned off the oscars when Hitchcocks Psycho, probably THE, most influencial film of its era, and the basis of the modern horror film. It is considered the most acedemically talked about movie of all time. YET IT DID NOT RECIEVE AN OSCAR!!!!!
admitedly the appartment, the winner of that year is critically acclaimed, it was a popular, non controvercial decision. yet the academy didnt have to guts to award the oscar to one of the most influencial films of all time.
that is why i dont

Today's the big day! I am going to watch a couple Cassavetes films myself, for the rest of you, enjoy your glitz and if you're not "not watching" with me this year, you're still invited next year all the same.
Peace

most film schools place the Apartment up there with Psycho, and i know we spend quite a while breaking down the script for the Apartment as we did the editing for Psycho.
also, a lot of directors name The Apartment and Billy Wilder as an influence over Hitchcock.

HDK - I bet you really DID watch, didn't you? C'mon, admit it.
Nope. I did keep tabs on the winners on the net cause me and my friend/composer/collaborator have had an annual bet on who can guess the most wins and the loser has to buy the winner a pint. But I did watch the red carpet as usual, but in my defense I needed a good laugh, cause the red carpet's such a joke
