Exactly. If you believe you can make this work, then it's right for you. I almost applied, but then a much more important project came along and took away all of my free time for the next few years.

You'll get the chance to make a movie all right...but it better be a hip, marketable movie, one that will be molded into whatever they say it is. Which means you could be making the next "Stomp the Yard". If you're cool with that, then by all means. Also, be ready to have the tag "From So and So, the winner of Fox's On the Lot!"

Yeah, I was pretty upset seeing the preview for this. It undermines the artform and film IS an artform. And besides...how can you expect to make a true, dramatic, groundbreaking piece of film on a network like fox. I can just see the contract they have to sign:No cursing, no nudity...you can do ULTRAviolence of course, because in american film, killing people isn't looked down upon nearly as much as seeing a person naked...but nothing too controversial or political or out of the mainstream. This is going to be a terrible, terrible show.

It seems like you're implying that a movie can't be dramatic, or groundbreaking without cursing and nudity. That's kinda weird.

That said, the show might see an amazing movie or it might not. The 24 hour film festivals don't produce the best work ever, but they're not expected to. They just find the people who do best under those conditions.

If I won this show I would turn down the million dollar deal.
And then make a privately funded film of my own.

i'm submitting a film that i made last month. it's decent, but i don't think i'll make it. i need to shorten it to 5 mins (its 7 right now) heres the link:

i think you guys are completely wrong over what the show will end up being. they are looking for someone who is diverse and can entertain artistically. there is no way you can say that studio films are not artistic... your telling me capote, letters from iwo jima, and many many others that have won oscars are not artistic? give me a break.

If I had a bit more time, and i didn't rely so heavily on copyrighted music (i know, i know, save me the lecture) I might have.

I feel like I wouldn't want to make a studio movie with studio money right now anyway. Besides, with the number of people who will be submitting, the odds are actually probably more against you than if you went the conventional route into hollywood.

Actors? What actors?

I took a look at your film man... i liked it acting was decent, but could have been better as always in a student film. It was a tad predicatable but thats ok because it was shot nicely so i didnt mind watching all the way threw. You can easily cut out some of the opening dialouge to shorten it up a bit. Good luck.

Excellent job, man. I know it's tough cutting your baby, but a line of dialog from the begging and a walking shot or two should help you get it down to five.

Go for it! Great movie!

Good luck man! Once we know who from here entered we can all rally to support them! Even though I think its a huge mistake! But my problem is with the producers wanting to take advantage of desperation not the filmmakers themselves!

But seriously think if you wanted to be a musician would you want to be the american idol? And how is this any different? And do you want to be the Clay Aiken of filmmaking?

Plus I wonder how much product placement is going to go on. In American Idol they have these huge commercial montages with the contestants singing about CocaCola and the GAP.

This week "On the lot" contestants will make a 7 second existential, new wave, film noir about the McGriddle.

Count me out.

Hey guys. I just mailed in my submission today. I see a lot of people on here have a very negative view of the show, but I thought that it actually looked like a lot of fun. Who wouldn't want to make films with the best resources in the industry while having the world watch your work and professionals critique it? And what better way to gain experience than to work with the best in the business?

I cut down my 13 minute short, The Study Lounge (on this site Smile), into 5 minutes of scenes/trailer. I'll let you know when it gets posted on the "On The Lot" site, which takes a while. But if you want to check out the 5 minute version, here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLSu2W9PlWQ

Good luck to everybody on here who submits!

I will be submitting my new film soon after we shoot some scenes on Saturday. Just one question though, do you really have to create a 30-45 second introduction of yourself? I've seen a lot of people's work on there without an introduction. I mean, getting my movie down to 5 minutes has not be a trivial task. I basically had to rewrite the entire script. I need the extra space. Plus I've seen people on there that have exceeded 5 minutes so I don't think it's that strict.

Yes, you do need to submit the intro. Some people either chose not to post their intros online, or they posted before the intro became mandatory. But you do need to submit your intro on the DVD copy (versus the online upload). And in case you weren't sure, the intro does not count as part of the 5 minutes, so it's 5 minutes plus an intro.

Oh alright, thanks that helps a lot. About the DVD submission though. Would you have to submit an actually DVD video? No menus or anything like that right?

Not quite sure what you're asking when you talk about menus, but if you're asking whether to send a data DVD or a playable DVD, send a playable one that plays on DVD players. They view films via DVD players, not through the website. Hope that helps.

Yeah thats actually exactly what I was asking. But what I meant by the menus are the DVD menus. Like if you want to create a DVD menus on iDVD or DVD Studio Pro or make it automatically play when your insert the DVD in a player.

If you can, I'd suggest using some simple dvd software so you have a basic top menu, cause you wouldn't want them to be confused when your film starts playing on its own.
