I mean, what exists as far as your lighting products go?

Where do you guys buy your stuff?

Lighting was something I was good at, with what I had... but essentially, everything is broken...but, that's what happens when you have rather rambunctious actors.

Note: I was using old construction lights and the such.

You don't want to hear about what I call light - I'm sure you don't Wink

My lighting consisted of four 60wt tin clamp lights for a few weeks. I quickly discovered that without additional light these produced a very noisy image, of slightly worse quality than Bin Laden's home videos. I upgraded to a pair of 500 wt halogen worklights from Home Depot, and I have my eye on the 4 light stand they sell Smile

I use lights. Hahahahahahaha. I've got a few 500 wt halogen worklights.

I used to use 60wt clamp lights too, to light my green screen actually. they worked decently enough, but nothing beats the work lights.

I use Home Depot work lights, too, but I only use them when absolutely necessary. I have access to several Arri kits at work, but I haven't really needed them yet.

So, what exactly goes into your Arri kit?

I've got two 650W Arris that are about 15 years old that my dad stole from his office, and some 40W flood lights, and two 500W homedepot work lights + two 1 million candlelight portable halogen lights (good for lighting in tough spots where there are no outlets).

The ones that I use are pretty old 450s. They do the job, though.

I think HDK is trying to say that he follows the conventions and rules set out in the 10 commandments of DOGME 97

as for me I have a couple floods with stands, which i just use for little stuff and doco work that i do.

I truely believe in hiring lights. It allows you to achieve the look your after with equipment designed to get that look. Most film lighting places have millions of bucks of lights to choose from so its no like your not gonna get what you need. and its not that expensive. damn cheaper that owning a million bucks worth of lights that you will probably only ever using 95% of like twice

Actually, I prefer to call myself a "Film Nazi," but I'm not so much into very strict rules like the Dogme 10 commandments (althoough I do think it makes creative film). I will say that I have been really inspired by a string oof recent "24 hour" films 9Film 1, Film 3 etc...) because I'm making my first feature this summer on a budget of 300 dollars (and thats Canadian funds, so that means its less for you). Therefore since I have a limited budget and availability of actors, I'm not willing to take the time and spend the money to do something right, cause I could do lighting hhalf assed but it would be a waste of time. I woould much rather take more time to set up my shots and work with my actors cause I just feel its more important. That and I have a camera and lighting class in my film program for college and it's just a waste of time, basically all that I've learned came out of what looks like a kindergarten colouring book worth 8 bucks which has taught me more about filmmaking than everything else I've done in college, funny hey...but yeah, lighting just isn't something that interests me personally and I think there are positives and negatives to using it, the same way thhere are positives and negatives to uusing natural light. That and that great candle lit scene in "Barry Lyndon" convinced me that natural light can be used to a better advantage. Just my 8.56 cents canadian for ya Big Grin

Some filming doesn't need that lighting. I've learnt that the natural light creates an atmosphere, that shows the audience what location they are watching.

I have no idea, didn't even know there was a textbook and modern methods. Basically we learn using keys, fills, bg, and back lights, usually 3 point lighting though (i have very little talent or knowledge obviously)

3 point is textbook.
Thats why your stuff turned out like a kindergarden colouring book.

I've never used it or cared before, just always been more focussed on my shots and stories, but just for my information, what is "modern method"?
