My thesis film (Undergrad) was funded entirely by a government grant. Another film I shot was sponsored in large part by an auto manufacturer (The Director/Producer team and myself did some commercial work for them in exchange). You just have to get creative and ask any/everyone. Make sure you're organized first, though.

Whoa Rob. How did you go about getting funding from the government for your thesis film? Or should i say, how do I get the government to give ME cash for a thesis film? R. M.
If I remember correctly it was a Federal (25% it could've been state though) Grant offered to University of California students of any major to complete an undergraduate research or thesis project.
I had to submit a treatment, script, budget etc... and follow up with a statement about how the funds aided me (They didn't even want a copy of the project).
