My friends and I are planning on investing in one of these two models. The GL2 looks about what we need, but should we go the whole nine and go for an XL1? Can someone compare the quality and features for us?
I'm not what you might call an expert on these two cameras, but I do know people who own both models and what I understand is, yes, the XL-1 is totally sweet, but the GL-2 is basically the same (or at least a comparable) video quality. Of course, it has less in the features department... If you're creative and can do without all the bells and whistles, get the GL-2.
But before you take my advice, find somebody who can break it down in a more technical aspect for you and decide by that.
Umm I have the GL2 right now and love it like its nobody's business. I have used the XL-1 and they are great as well. They are bigger (heavier of coures) do not have a viewfinder (flip out screen). The quality is the same, unless you decided to really go all out and get all the sweet lenses for it. The interchangable lenses is where the XL1 buts the gl2 to shame. But keep in mind they're expensive. If u want specific stats just go to http://www.canondv.com/xl1s/index.html for the XL1s and go to http://www.canondv.com/gl2/index.html for the canon gl2
hope that helps

As far as picture quality goes, the GL2 is equal to the XL1. They both feature 3CCD photography. However, the major difference between the two is that the XL1 is much, much more adaptable. You can change the lenses on the camera, whereas on the GL2 you cannot change the lenses. That's the major difference.
Both cameras are excellent cameras, but unless you need the ability to change lenses (which can be very expensive) stick with the GL2.

They're different. The 1s--the new model--has more bells and whistles and is more expensive than the xl-1. If you're operating under any budget, I'd say just go for the GL-2. The sound circuit is as good, if not better the the XL-1s. And with the $150 wide angle adapter, you get a great range of focal lengths (so wide it's distorted to so telephoto you can't hold it steady). With the xl-1s, if you want to take advantage of it's adaptability, you'll be spending many more thousands buying a B+W viewfinder, manual lenses, matte boxes, french flags, etc.
Plus, are taking into account a good tripod, lighting and sound equipment? Those three normally represent thousands of dollars each and will improve your pictures exponentially compared to buying an XL-1s (anyone disagree?). They should also last longer than any consumer camera you buy today.
