I am curious about how other filmmakers think of music within the context of filmmaking. I personally find that music is one of the most important aspects that i think about when creating a film. When i write, i sometimes listen to a couple of songs on repeat to channel the emotion. As a musician, frequently, i find that my inspiration for films comes from music i hear, or create. Sometimes, the music fills my head before i even have pictures or a story to go with it. Regardless, i would like to know how others feel about music and its role in thier own creative process.

Music is wonderful - it can make or break a film.

It's always magical when I'm cutting a film and I first start to add music to it.

i personally dislike the idea of adding or creating music once it is edited. I like to think of music as an audio counterpart to the picture, rather than "in addition to".

usually artists around here encourage the idea of getting bands or any sort of music producer to make some music for your film. I personally think this is the only route to go to show you MADE this film. I know lots of music producers and its all cause of the internet, i haev found many bands that i never would have known! And these people are usually more than e xcited about the possibility of collaberating....now if only I could GET a film DONE! Wink

When it comes to movie trailers I always heard producers dont need to pay royalties to use music in their trailer...I dono though...I have made a couple trailers for my documentary using some songs I like over extra images I had. While i am editing there are specific types of songs Ill edit into the footage to let my song writer know what kind of musical feel I want for a scene...then Ill redit with the new song in it.

I don't know... for my last two features the composer did some amazing stuff.

The first film I used an original score on, the composers got a rough assembly of the film and the script.

They invited me over, I listened to what they wrote, and it was perfect...even though they went against what I wanted, they were right on...especially when I compared it to what they wrote with my requests.

I laid it down, and altered both sound and picture to make them work together.

And my film would not be half of what it is without the perfect, beautiful music that my composers made for me.

music is everything, especially a documentary if you ask me. Low level music works, such as some electronic downtempo or café del mar type music.
