I use Final Cut HD w/After Effects for compositing w/Magic Bullet for color correction. Since you've got a PC I would suggest going with Adobe Premiere Pro as your next step, then maybe upgrading to Avid. And welcome to the site!

i too used windows movie maker, it sux, but came free with my pc. it really 9and i mean REALLY) fuct up my sound quality on my first film "Entre to Exis" and i swore never to use it again. all i can say is that if you are on a mac (which im guessing you aren't) use final cut pro (FCP). on windows he onl other thing i ever used was Adobe Premier, but wait for other people to give you good suggestions. all i really have to say is that it a good editing program wont necessarily make ur film good, it may help out and make it easier, btu a good story and idea goes much further.

premeire pro's pretty expensive, but last year (maybe it was before then) they came out with premeire elements, which is pretty much premeire without some of the features (features that most likely won't be used too much). it looks pretty nice if you just want to do normal editing and stuff. iot's only $100 too, and I think that the premeire/photoshop elements bundle is around $120 or maybe $150, so if you'd use photoshop too, that might be something to look into as well.

I woudl say go with Sony Vegas or Sonic Movie Studio, which is the less expensive, more beginnerish program. Its cheaper than Avid and FCP, and the platform is really easy to work with.

my school buys premiere pro in bulk packages, and since i basically live in the communications department, my teacher let me take a copy for a small fraction of the price. (haha, considering all the tapes and DVD-RWs ive stolen over hte years, i consider were even, haha)

but yea, i have never worked with final cut or avid, but pro does anything i need to do, and other stuff that u would need. i always wonder what final cut has to offer that makes it so much better than premeire, but i have no idea since ive never handled it

first of all, 'Alex C' i wouldn't reveal too much about your teacher who sells school bundles to his students for small fees. lol Smile
secondly, i went the full hog and bought an apple mac G5 in order to run Final Cut Pro in its full capacity because i think that the quality of the editing package you use does alter things a lot, especially if you know how to use it correctly. unfortunately i am just a beginner but hope to come more adapt to the program in the none to distant future.
if you are thinking of buying a copy of final cut pro then you are best off going to ebay and searching on there, i think i paid around the £250 mark for my copy. Smile
