DV magazine is a free magazine, I get it and it's pretty good. The site is www.dv.com

(if I remember right, when you sign-up for the site it asks if you want a free subscription)

MovieMaker seems pretty good. I've got one issue of it, and it's quite interesting. Variety is what the industry reads. You can subscribe to the weekly or daily version. It's got all the inside news as it occurs.

DV is not bad for product news, etc. but it's pretty thin. I received it free for a year or two. It ran out recently.

Are you looking for gossip, technique, or news? IMO filmmaking magazines are weird. Imagine a 'painting magazine.' What would it cover? How to paint? Get a book for the basic techniques (Mackendrick "On Filmmaking", Rodriguez "Rebel Without a Crew"). Then improvise.

Variety is the way to go. If you're a university student, it's really cheap too. Daily Variety is something like $150 a year.
