I know i have used Adobe Photoshop for muzzle flashes, or you can go online and find sites that have muzzle flashes that you can add in. Where in Wa are you at?

I have premier 6.0 but it shud be pretty much the same as your version.
Muzzle flashes:
Drag the muzzle flash (which shud be on black backround) into the video 2 track. Then cut it down to the desired length (2 frames is usualy right). Then select the muzzle flash clip, and under the "effect control" box, chose "transparency". For "key type" chose "luminence". Then under the "effect control" box again, click on "motion" setting. Set the fill color to black (as long as the backround behind the muzzle flash is black) and use the rotation and zoom nobs to control where the muzzle flash is in the clip. Once the motion is completed, render the clip. ahhhh, this all sounds really complicated, but its really not...
Splitscreens:
Put the first clip in video 1, put the second clip in video 2. Go to the "transparency" box and you can see 4 white dots around the "sample" image. Drag these dots to the desired place. If needed you can also go into the motion settings and change the position of each clip. Hope all this helps.

as for the effects problem, i may be misinterpriting, but you need to render the effects first. Just hitting enter should do the trick. Not to sound insulting, these are valid questions, but i feel a trip to the manual may help.

if you want to preview your effect without rendering you can hold down ALT and scroll through the timeline to view it, sort of a mock render (wont be realtime), but it will give you the gist on what to change before you waste time rendering then finding out its not how you wanted it.
