Anyway just reply no poll. What is the best way to get into the film industry. Make an independent film? Write a script and submit it to an agent? Goto Film School and make some connections? Submit short films to film festivals? Get a job at a studio and work your way up?

No right answer, no wrong one. The more you can educate yourself, the more physical "product" you can put out there the better.

The great thing about film is that unlike some other artistic mediums you actually can go make one without anyones help. It takes time, work, investors, and a bunch of boring red tape but it can be done. If its good the people will acknowledge it (by people I mean audience)

what do you mean by 'break in'? Is working as a PA or in one of the trades breaking in? Or do you mean becoming a working director? There are very different paths (not that there is just one path for anything) depending on what you want to do.

Whatever you want to do, the sooner you can physically get yourself to LA or New York, the better your chances for 'breaking in.'

If i were you, i would worry about "breaking in". If you wind up making indipendent films your whole life, i say be happy. Your still doing what you love and having fun, just because your not rakeing in the big bucks doesnt mean you havent "made it".

THE ANSWER IS:

"Depends on what you want to do in Hollywood".

*Keep this in mind: All roads DO NOT lead to the same place. Be smart about what door you choose to
walk through.....

Let me break down a few things....

1) You don't submit your script to an agent. No "legit" agent will "LET" you submit to them, unless you know them or have a referral. Assuming you want to be a writer one of the best ways to break in is as a "reader". (if you don't know what a "reader" is, do a search on-line). Being a reader gives you a few things, money to live, free time to write, and most importantly access to people who make decisions. The last perk being, access to scripts that sell and don't. You get to see what people want.....

2) Working your way up "from the inside" (i.e. at a studio, agency, or production Co.)? Well, if you want to be an executive or an agent, that's not a bad place to start. You should be warned, though, that many people in these positions have law degrees from prestigious schools. Although, it is possible to by-pass. This isn't the recommended approach if you're trying to be a creative person.

3) Indie films: This is your best bet to "break in" as a "DIRECTOR". If your film is great, people will notice. Next thing you know you'll be offered a deal at a studio. Did I make that sounds easy? It's not....

Good luck... And yes, move to LA as soon as possible. That's where it all goes down.

Absolutely! Film School is a great place to start building "relationships". That's one of the biggest perks about going to film school. Not mention learning film.

You just have to have a clear enough head that you are still thinking as an individual. Taking from it what fits your sensibilities of film and disregarding the egotistical chatter your teacher may wish to instill. "Some" teachers despise Hollywood. That's not a good message. They should really be indifferent to it all and just focus on the artistic side of it (while remaining objective about what ART is to different students). Leave the political / ethical ideals up to the individual to decide for themselves...

"Whatever gets you to where you wish to end up... there's no wrong answer"
