I feel that cinema in America is our most used and appreciated art form. Of course this is only becuase of American literature backing it up. Some argue it is our music, but film is inheritely an American medium(as it can be any other country).

Of course there is Bahliwood, which is much larger, but film here is such a resource and a study , and I admire it.

But, I love all films, but this seems to be America's art form.

What do you think?

Funny you should bring this up. Robert Evans couldnt stop talking about this when I meet him a few weeks back.

He said ,"Film is the only thing that can be made 100% in America (although, not always) and then be exported around the world, and be Number 1 in every single country it goes to. No other product, manufactured here can claim that (coca-cola does, but they are bottled abroad. Big Grin)

Despite this fact, the government does nothing to support it. There are almost no film grants. They require films to be privatley funded, and in no way support it. Its Americas #1 export, and they couldnt care less. Now, he was crying "Boo Hoo" for the studios, they are doing just fine. He was upset, because the government does little to support film education. Why wouldnt you want the youth of America to learn a trade that is the best selling product the country has? Just something to put in your pipe, and smoke.

More competition, lots more biters and posers?

Nah, I'm fine where I am, and I don't like the idea of 20% or more of america's youth pursuing film.

I understand that it is a shame that our government cares nothing about film-making. But I also think this is partly why we do it so well. Even though I would definitely rather have more money than less, I think the whole process of creating a film is way more creative when you have less help. You are limited, so you have to be as creative and open minded as possible, whereas with lots of money, you can buy anything (not saying you can't make a good movie with lots of money) and are less creative.

But I'm not sure what I think about 20 percent of our population pursuing film. It would definitely expand the industry and new ideas would rise everywhere, but it would turn into one of those little...fads...I don't know...Someone else will probably be able to put it into words. Roll Eyes

I am not afraid of competition, but thats just me.

Wanna see what happens when a government supports film? Go Rent "The Ugly" it is a horror flick, and a pretty cool one at that, completly financed by the New Zeland government. This is what i want. Grants from the goverment that are earned, and then comtrol ends there. You recieve funds, in the form of "Film Stamps" (Sorta like food stamps) and you make a movie with em. That would be great. Hey, I can dream. Of course, that has about as much chance of happening, as me awaking tomorrow to find Superman, and Jesus making me waffles. (BTW, if that does happen, im getting Jesus to finance a feature, and Superman will apear in a cameo as "the gay friend of the girl".)

While the money the government could bring to the film industry would be enticing, just think about how many conservatives (I'm not attacking conservatives, mind you!) in politics hate hollywood. If a very conservative group were elected into office, it could easily find a way to censure what comes from filmmakers.

As far as supporting film education, I am for college classes on film, but not in any lower level education. Think about how many kids dread Literature and analyzing it; I mean, you could argue this, but American literature is all but dead (especially when compared to film). Just think if film fell to the same category as literature.
Now don't get me wrong, I love literature. My little knowledge of literature is the greatest bit of education I have ever gotten about how to make films/stories, but even if standard film classes could help increase the level of awareness about good films, the film industry would be in serious risk of losing the influence it has on American culture.

BTW, I believe that music is actually the most influencial artform in America, but film is a close second and, in my opinion, the best.

Jesus would be a cool producer. But most religious movies suck. What am I saying?! Only the movies about major figures in religion suck. Like that documentary on the life of Muhammed. That sucked.

Yeah, I read an article about it in Time like 2 months ago. All I know is that Gibson is directing it.

It's filmed in Aramaic and Latin, two dead languages.....without subtitles. That takes balls.

I find it ironic that with all the trouble Gibson took with historical accuracy, he still gets a white anglo-saxon protestant (Jim Caveizal) to play the part of Jesus.
