Today I was working on a production company name and I was wondering what other filmmakers came up with and how. Right now I'm leaning towards Sucka Punch Films, although I haven't quite made up my mind.

Personally, I named my production company after something I'm very close to. I'm from Miami, so I wanted to name my company after Miami somehow without being too obvious. Looking at a book about the history of the city, I read the name 'Fort Dallas.' I've held on to that name for 12 years.

Pick a name that's close to you or that has a certain meaning to you. To take a look at my company name, check out my website at http://home.earthlink.net/~gabe43/

The name is both an identity and a marketing tool.

Ideally, you should pick something that is either based on the perception about your productions that you intend to give to your viewers (example: Pixar implies digital animation), or, just the opposite, pick something esoteric (oooo how many times do you get to use that word in a day?) that doesn't bias a viewer into thinking anything in particular (example: Warner Bros.)

For me, I just do this stuff for my own entertainment, so I just have "A Film Unleashed by Nick PRODUCTION" at the beginning, then let all the lowercase letters fade away to leave: "A F U N PRODUCTION" Wink

Have fun! Big Grin

My partner and I wanted a sort of "Universal" sounding name, but we couldn't think of anything. Then we looked for names of constellations or something and found "Imega." so we decided to call ourselves "Imega Productions."
I think it has a little ring to it.

Funny Looking Productions is mine, but I would suggest something ominous, y'know? Doesn't have to mean anything, something like Vox Productions, Trorr Productions, or Gladiatrix Productions or something. That would be so cool, presenting... 'TRORR PRODUCTIONS (the extra 'r' is for ratifyingly awesome!)'

Everybody is Funny Looking in their own way

I use Murphman Studios, I heard the name Murphman on a movie, laughed and it became an inside joke for a little while...and now BAM! It's the name of our company.

So many people out there that want to start their his or her own "company." Here's my two cents: Unless your company intends to be huge where everyone will recognize your name by who you are, I would suggest making your "company name" your own name. Example... if your name is Dick Clark, call it Dick Clark Productions. This will be so much more recognizable to viewers than just some phony name. Plus it will always sound catchy because it is your own name! And it stands for who you are! If you try to come up with some bogus name, often peopel will just see it and say "what the hell is that." Don't worry, i did the same thing when i was younger... I called my "company" (consisting of me) "TIDAL PRODUCTIONS". well after countless faces of "what is that!?" I finally changed my name to simply, JVB PRODUCTIONS, for my initals.

Well Jason, I am not the only one who makes movies under my company's name. My brother works with me (he's directing our next film that I wrote) and I get friends to help me on and off. Besides, I believe that going by my name is unoriginal...besides, it's not that chatchy or pronouncable to those who don't get French. (Its SHAL-ih-FOUR) So all in all, I'm still undecided on a name. Thanks for the advice guys.

Yes, you do have a point there. If you have more people working in it than just yourself, then it makes sense to give it a name. I just see too many kids out there that give theirselves silly names, consisting of just 1 guy. And it's always good to be creative... thats what this is all about!

Goodluck on your productions Thomas.
