I recently found this cool site that shows how to build a steady cam for $14 (actually turned out to be about $20, but oh well it still works great) and I highly reccomend doing it. I built one and have been playing with it all day. Just thought I would pass it on.
i built it for about 12, and it works great as long as you walk a certain way. basically, it adds weight to a light camera, you have to keep it steady, but it works nicely.

I built the rig too, for about 25 dollars though. I have two versions of it, the walking version with the longer end pipe and the sports one with the short end pipe. I use this with a GL2 and it works really good for such a good price.

Saw this site about a year ago... his design is OK but it lacks a gimbal like you'd see on a real Steadicam. Without the gimbal you're simply adding more mass below the camera - it increases the moment arm and limits some movement, but the camera is not isolated.
I built my own using a ball head from an old tripod - a little WD40 on it and it's smooth as silk. It's so smooth that it must be rebalanced with each use, but it works well.
