Blah those are macs... why would you want to go to a school that uses macs?

(j/k JW!)

J.Michael, have you been to any other schools to compare it to though?

might be taking a trip to USC, because thats the only other place i would go...
NY, too cold...
so USC might be the only other place i actually 'visit'...

ive done my fair share of research on all the big schools, but im not going to visit every one of them...

Isn't there some old expression about books, and covers and judging? It seems that many of the anti-F.S. testimonials circulating around talk about 'How great the tour was' and that it was completely mis-leading. I admit I have no first hand experience with Full Sail or its' graduates. I just feel that warning signs are often put up to actually protect people and there are more warning signs about F.S. than any other school that I know of (Far out-weighing the few positive testimonials IMHO). Hopefully you'll have one of the good experiences should you go there J.Michael.

Best of luck no matter where you end up!

haha, a wise man once said... (josh)...
"film school is what you make of it"
which is 100% true...

it doesn't matter where you go...
NYU, USC, UCLA, FULLSAIL, UNIVERSITY OF TX..

its how you use that school to your advantage, and how much "passion" you actually have for film...

hell, if you wanted to, you could work at McDonald's , flip some burgers, and fund your films..submit them to film festivals, and get it...

another wise man (me) said...
"90% of the graduates at NYU won't make it"
and i continued saying "90% of the graduates from Full Sail won't make it"

which is ture too, because unless you bust your ass, and make something for yourself.. then you are going to be unsuccessful no matter what...

for the rest of us 10%-er's...
it doesnt matter where we go, because everyone has their own path..
and we have to make that path, our own path, because its the kids that FOLLOW, those are the 90%-er's

YEA, USC is f'ing amazing. It is so beautiful and i so want to go there. They have awsome editing labs (named after george lucas) and other great facilities. They have their own movie theatere where they screen movies before their even out. Quite insane. I would so love to go their, but i probably wont get accepted. They told me that something like 75 people get accepted to their film school a year. Yea, i cant compete with that.

As one of the happy Full Sail graduates If I were you I'd put serious consideration into going to FSU, UT, or USC. Full Sail is a good school, but those 3 are probably better. I didn't have those options and I would have gone to FSU if I had gotten in. Not being negative toward Full Sail, just positive about FSU, USC...

Take the FS tour with a grain of salt. They are very good at selling the school.

the problem with full sail is that almost no one knows how the equipment works completely. A lot of the teachers are just Full Sail graduates themselves, since they'll take less pay. They know how stuff works, but if you ask them something very particular they can't give you an answer. If you ask them about doing something complicated, they can't help becaues they've never tried it since they're not actual d.p.s, directors, actors, etc.

the other thing my friend told me that went there is that they try to shove too much stuff into one class isntead of spreading into different units.

it does have good equipment though.

anyway, my friend ended up switching from film to computer animation because he could do all that stuff himself and just use their equipment.

I cannot say this enough: DO NOT FOCUS ON EQUIPMENT IF YOU CHOOSE A FILM SCHOOL. In the end, you can always rent stuff. More important are the teachers, the classes and...the students!
I would even put the environment before the equipment.

Do I need a 35mm camera if I cannot pay the 10000 dollar for filmstock? Do I need my 18k HMI if no one told me how to write a good short?

Do I need fancy editing labs if I can edit my 30000 dollar film on a g4 powerbook with an aditional monitor/tv?

I hope you understand for what I am going...

If you get into USC, go for USC...I do not know much about full sail....but I know that most students suck and so do the teachers.

haha same thing applies to the students at USC...
just a bunch of spoiled rich kids, trying to 'make it big' becuase their 'daddy' or 'mommy' bought them a new camera.

they decide to go to a school like USC, where I'd say 99.9% of the students are just AVERAGE, and only that.1% actually DO stand out...

trust me, full sail isnt the only school that has haters... i've talked to a few CURRENT students at USC, and they don't seem too happy either..

ANYWAYS, who said i was looking at FS for the equipment? That's just an added 'plus',,,

And besides, I still have a few more months to decide before I have to start freaking out about which college to go to...

LOL, laters

I think if you just want to learn the equipment and how Hollywood works - the Full Sail sounds great.

Granted 40k is expensive - but going to USC or NYU is probably 4 times that. USC and NYU has better name recognition out here though - but you pay for what you get.

If you want to do "film school" on the cheap - move out to Los Angeles and do the PA route. Learning on the job. It's risky - but so is everything in life.

That being said - Full Sail does sound like a good opportunity to learn the equipment well - so when you do get a chance for a job out here in LA you can say that you have experience with such and such piece of equipment which might make you more valuable.

BUT - I can't stress this enough. Just because you think you have learned some piece of equipment at a film school PLEASE don't act like a "know it all" when you get out here. I've heard some stories from other friends in the biz of bad experiences with some film school graduates who acted like they knew it all because they took a course at a film school. Needless to say, they weren't working for them much longer.

When you get out here - be humble. Having some knowledge is great but always be willing to learn.

For example, I've been cutting on Avid for over 10 years now and I've even been teaching it on the side for 6 years - and just last night I learned a new trick on it that I never knew before. One is always learning - keep that in mind. "Film school" never ends.

actually the tuition is close to 64K and I believe they are increasing it another couple of thousand.

Also, they do offer bachelors of science in film, though I'm not sure whether or not this is the same as a university's bachelors degree. Anyone know about this?
