In April I am going to attend the NYFA for the two-month film-making course: since I'm from Italy, I'm starting to look for housing. I was wondering if someone on this board could give me some advice on finding accomodation in NYC!

I looked up some student residences on the net, but they seem to be rather on the expensive side...

Housing in New York is going to set you back a few; there's just no getting around that. I would recommend going to Craigslist (http://newyork.craigslist.org/), checking under the "sublets" section, and doing the best you can.

If price is indeed a concern, consider subletting a room in a two- or three-bedroom apartment up in Harlem or in one of the less popular parts of the outer boroughs. My guess is, you could make a share happen for about $700 p/month, give or take.

As for a one-bedroom in midtown? Absolute minimum, $1700-$1800 p/month.

I asked the NYFA for advice and they said that they provided dorm style accomodation. Do you know anyone who attended NYFA and chose this possibility? They told me a "double" would be around $1250 and $1400 p/month.

For the record, I don't know anything about NYFA or their housing options. But my general impression is one of...

WHAT?!?!?! If by "double" in a "dorm-style accommodation" they mean the normal thing--two people to a bedroom in an SRO--then $1250-$1400 sounds like a f*ing stick-up. You could get that price subletting in a share in a good neighborhood--with a "single" bedroom in a "real life-style accommodation."
